Las Pardelas in the rugged north of Lanzarote is an environmental centre in which close, even intimate, relationships between people and environment are rediscovered. It is a very special place, part outdoor classroom, part farm, part retreat. It was established by - and continues to be run as a family enterprise by the Dizy family.

Situated in the less accessible north of the island, Las Pardelas is not part of the tourist trail. From day to day, it is visited by a small but steady number of local and overseas day visitors who enjoy the ambience of the traditional farm and the small restaurant. However, it is transformed when larger groups visit – whether young offenders from other Canary Islands, primary school children, or sufferers of Alzheimer’s who for a short while are returned to the rural life they miss. We cannot provide any rigorous analysis of the benefits they gain on these visits. Carlos and his family’s skills lie in providing the affective experiences that visitors cannot find elsewhere, rather than in formal analyses of how it all works. But work it does.
